favourite underrated part of the locked tomb is how in gideon, everyone fights w swords and magic, so we the audience are just like, okay this is how things are in this universe, there are no guns, it’s all swords and magic, neat! and then in harrow, wake has a gun, but every non-lyctor who sees wake’s gun considers it a weird and ancient weapon, so we the audience are like, okay so there used to be guns in this universe. and the characters are vaguely aware of what they are, but they’ve become pretty much obsolete, which gives wake’s ghost this terrifying old-school vibe, cool!…

and then we come to nona, and everyone and also their mother has a gun, and we the audience are like, oh. we’ve been seeing all this through the aristocratic space catholic sword-and-magic cultists who are only a small and also kind of brainwashed part of what’s going on in this universe, and there’s been a whole gritty, grounded space dystopia going on this entire time with absolutely fascinating worldbuilding, political, and urban warfare elements, neat! but the whole time nona is only interested in patting everyone’s dogs.

I’ve seen people complain about Gwen saying to her dad “you’re a good cop” but I don’t think they understand what that scene actually means. Gwen’s dad is supposed to represent the “good cop”. It’s like Gwen says: he puts on that badge everyday so someone worse than him doesn’t. Pre Gwen’s reveal, he SEEMS like a good person, advocating for bringing peter’s killer to justice. But then he finds out, and in that moment, values the law over his teenage daughter. He even shows it in their reconciliation scene, even after not seeing his daughter for MONTHS, by arguing against Gwen being a vigilante despite the all the good shes done. When Gwen says “you’re a good cop,” she’s not saying “youre a good person” or “youre a good dad”. She’s saying “youre a BAD person. You’re a BAD dad. you value the law over my life, no matter what I do. You’re willing to sacrifice me for what you assume is the greater good, but it’s not even that.”

So he decides not be a good cop anymore.

Summary

“Wednesday, you are so new to love’s torturous sting. It simply takes time to get used to the poison, my darling. You have to build up a tolerance for it. Then – you’ll start to wonder how you ever lived without it.”

Enid accidentally summons a demon in an attempt to communicate with her wolf, and somehow – that is not Wednesday’s biggest problem upon the return to Nevermore. With a raging suspicion that Principal Weems was not actually murdered, Wednesday starts to unravel her latest mystery while trying not to unravel herself. As emerging powers cause her to manifest physical symptoms, Wednesday has to learn to rely on those around her if she is going to grow as a Raven.

Ultra slow-burn WenClair, moving forward in an organic relationship, building from roommates to best friends to more. Picking up on some plot points from S1, Wednesday develops not only new abilities, but emotions and friendships as she examines her life through her new lens of Nevermore.

As I am squeezing in my writing time before vacation, I am reflecting on how proud I am of this fic. This is year 21 of writing fanfiction for me, and of course as we grow, our talents naturally increase, but I have never felt so accomplished about a piece of writing before. If you need some light reading (lmfao this fic will top one million words by the end of summer), I would like to recommend my own story. I don't ever do that and I probably won't do it again - but writing this fic has been such a bright spot in my life, and every opportunity I have to carve out a few thousand words I feel myself transcend.

When I received an old Addams Family book in the mail (here) a few weeks ago, I was flipping through and found the above summary of Wednesday. I have never felt more proud to be borrowing another character, as I feel that I do Charles Addams' Wednesday justice in this writing as we explore her sensitive/poetic side in addition to the harshness of her 2022 adaptation. (Don't worry - Enid will find Wednesday's sixth toe when she finally visits the Addams family home in Chapter 20.)

Because it will be a few weeks before the next update with Chapter 19 - which is going to be the longest chapter yet, here is a sneak peak of a WenClair scene (~2k, neck kisses)
BTW - if you haven't read the fic yet and you're nervous to because of the word count, I'll tell you a slow burn sometimes means the girls don't start smooching until 400k in, alright? BUT IT'S WORTH IT, I PROMISE! There's a plot going on! Lots of plot, actually. Mystery! Lore! Witchcraft! Character development! And the girls do eventually kiss, I promise! And chapter 18, where it will sit until July 8th, ends on a positive note, not one of my notorious cliffhangers.

Wednesday picks up the sleeping Enid and heads over to their room. Wolfing out takes a lot out of the werewolf and her Raven is always there to tend to her every need.

Yoko and Bianca run into the two in the hall.

Yoko: Holy shit.

Bianca: Uh…. Wends-

Wednesday, shushing them: Excuse me ladies. Can’t you see that my partner is sleeping? Please be quiet while we go back to our room.

Bianca: But….. she’s still in her werewolf form.

Yoko: How the fuck can you carry her she’s fucking massive?!

Wednesday, still carrying Enid with ease: Because I love her and care for her, Yoko. Why don’t you carry Divina sometime hm?

Enid whines at Wednesday stopping.

Wednesday: I’m sorry, Mon Coeur I shouldn’t have stopped. Lets go,

The recent walks away holding her giant pup leaving the siren and vampire stupefied.

Yoko: Why the fuck is she so strong.
